Car rental in Sicily
Renting a car in Sicily is not so obvious. The prices can make you dizzy. On popular search engines like carrentals.com or kayak they start at €100 per day for a small car in the fiat panda class. If you do a little research you can find much better prices.
There are plenty of local rental companies like Linea Auto where prices start at €45 per day even in high season! What are the pros and cons of such solutions?
Corporate rentals:
- rental with a credit card – you don’t have to worry if something’s wrong with your car – you can claim a refund
- rental with credit card – if you don’t follow local rules such as the ban on driving on dirt roads then a penalty will be enforced
- convenient online booking
- new cars 2021+ with low mileage
- well-equipped cars
- pick-up and drop-off at the airport or location of your choice
- possibility to pick up and drop off the car at various locations
- prices almost 100% higher than local rental companies
Local rentals:
- renting without a credit card on the basis of a civil law contract – in case of car failure it’s more difficult to claim your rights
- rental companies have very liberal regulations – problems usually only arise when the car is damaged
- often older cars (even 10 years old) with high mileage of over 100,000 km
- less equipped cars, sometimes even without air conditioning
- booking by email or whatsapp, staff often don’t speak English (google translate will be your friend)
- pick-up and drop-off at the rental address only
- prices starting from as low as €45
