Parking rules in Sicily

Parking rulers in Sicily.

Parking rules in Sicily, Italy, even though the streets seem to be chaotic, the residents and municipal services are quite careful about the markings of parking spaces. In more touristy places, it’s easy to get a ticket for improper parking.

  • On the streets we often see parking bans and under them at what times the ban applies
  • Extra hours are often given, for example for street cleaning
  • White lines mean free parking for everyone
  • Blue lines mean paid parking for everyone
  • Yellow lines indicate resident ID only parking

In some parking meters in Sicily you will pay by card, but it is always good to have cash with you. If the parking meter, after inserting the money, shows on the screen an hour or a day much more distant than the amount of money inserted into it would suggest, it means that the parking is free when you pay.

Remember to follow the parking rules in Sicily, contrary to appearances, it is not so difficult to get a fine for not having a ticket, which is 50€ even in the late evening hours.

Scammers

At parking lots in city centers or at popular attractions, there are often extortionists. First they show you where the free seat is and then they want 1-2€ for it. The best strategy against them is to simply ignore them and pretend they don’t exist even when they try to contact you.

If a parking space is marked white, it is always free!

ZTL Zones

In city centers you will also often see ZTL (Zona Traffico Limitato) signs, i.e. zones with limited traffic. Under each such sign there is information on which days and hours it cannot be crossed by a car without an identifier.

Finding free parking spaces

If you are in the downtown area, most of the places on the busier streets will be marked in blue, as toll. If you want to find free places, i.e. marked with white lines, try to enter the less frequented streets.

Often in Sicily, in places that seemed to have only paid parking spaces it is quite easy to find free parking by driving two / three blocks away!
