Is kitesurfing for me?

When learning to kite, the most important aspect is your character traits. Kitesurfing is a sport that requires a lot of self-denial and willingness if we want to master it well. However, you do not need physical strength or above-average condition.

The key element is not giving up during unsuccessful attempts to perform the exercise ordered by the trainer. We know from experience that learning often proceeds in a “jump” way. After many seemingly very unsuccessful attempts to perform a given evolution, one correct one is enough and all subsequent ones are repeatable. In this way we come to our goal, which is kitesurfing!

Free time and approach

Kitesurfing is a sport completely dependent on the weather. There is no wind – you do not kite. If you work full-time and meticulously plan your holidays, assuming that all your plans for free time will be implemented, you will have to get used to certain concessions. Going on a kayak trip for a week, it may happen that you swim less than you expected and in extreme cases not at all. This is the nature of the sport and you have to accept it. On the other hand, very good kite sessions will be remembered for a long time.

Naturally, there are spots where the wind statistics are better or worse. Unfortunately, it is impossible to predict the weather based on the past, which means that even when going to the windiest spot in the world, you have to reckon with the fact that not everything will go according to plan. But let’s not be mean! There are spots like Sicily, where we have 300 windy days a year (which is also not a 100% guarantee of swimming during a week trip!)

Prices

Kitesurfing is considered to be quite an expensive sport, but it should be taken into account that it is a very niche sport and only a few companies around the world deal with the design and production of equipment.

We can buy a sensible, used swimming set for EUR 1,500 (2023), if we aim for new equipment, we must take into account the expenditure of twice this amount. The life of the equipment is also not bad if we handle it in the right way. If you don’t treat your kites or boards brutally, they will surely last until you want to replace them with newer models.

Swimming trips are also not the most expensive. Close destinations such as Hel, Sicily, Sardinia or Egypt we are able to organize for 700 – 1000 eur / week. This is an amount that does not exceed the average cost of a winter snowboard or ski trip. Unlike alpine resorts, we are able to find good pubs or accommodation at reasonable prices on kayt spots.

If you need more advice before you go on your Sicilian holiday, feel free to contact us! We have been living on this beautiful island for years and we are happy to share our experiences.
