Algae at the bottom of the lagoon

Many of you may have heard that the Lo Stagnone lagoon has scabby plants that leave marks on the legs and cause an itching sensation. Is it true? How to deal with it?

At the bottom of Lo Stagnone there is indeed a distinctive plant species that can cause irritation upon contact with the skin. It resembles seagrass, is about 15 cm high and is virtually undetectable when walking through the lagoon. It’s not all that bad! We have some tips that will help you fully avoid irritation.

It doesn’t depend on your gender or skin type whether your skin is sensitive to them. Some people are just naturally immune to any irritation. Such people experience some skin redness at most. Most, however, experience local irritation similar to mild nettle burns.

Most people become immune to the plants after only about three days.

A very few experience slightly more severe skin irritation, which can result in small cuts in areas that touch the algae. Yet we can prevent this 100%.

Effective prevention methods:

  • wear long-legged leggings or long wetsuit – something that adheres to the skin along the entire length of the leg
  • wear neoprene socks to protect your feet

Remember that body parts most vulnerable during the lessons will be feet, calves, thighs and butt. They should be protected if you want to avoid skin irritation altogether. Remember that in 95% of cases irritation is not problematic, it only causes a slight itching effect and there’s no reason to panic!

If you are already a regular rider learning new tricks and often falling over, a short wetsuit will suffice; most people use either them or board shorts.

As long as you kite right-to-left and don’t fall into the water often you don’t have to worry about plants on the bottom at all.

Remember, these plants are the reason our spot has such flat water! Among other things, they prevent the lagoon from rippling.
