When is it windy in Sicily?

You often ask the question when is it windy in Sicily? You think for hours before you leave about the wind conditions in particular periods in Lo Stagnone. In this post we’ll try to explain what’s the best time to take your dream trip!

Let’s start with the wind statistics available online:

windfinder.com stats

As you can see, statistically we will experience the most wind in March, April and May, with peak falling in April. What does it look like in reality?

April and May

We can confidently confirm that you will experience the most strong wind in April and May. April is more capricious in terms of weather and rain. Frequent, heavy rainstorms, thunderstorms or even hail regularly make it difficult for us to kitesurf. The wind was also very strong and gusty. It often exceeds 30kt, and there are days with above 40kt.

May on the other hand is a very good month for kiting and learning. In the 2022 season, we had only 4 windless days in the entire month!

Kiting in these months requires a long wetsuit, but it’s not too cold. A 3/2 wetsuit will be enough.

June

From June onwards the classic Sicilian season begins with around 75% windy days and even, warm winds around 12 – 18kt.

Windless periods

In late June and early July, heat waves sweep across Europe. If you see that temperatures in European capitals are well above normal in Sicily, it probably doesn’t blow. This is mostly true for the months of June and July.

July and August

Classic Sicily, swimming without wetsuits, 80% wind days, even winds around 12 – 17kt starting mostly in the afternoon.

These months are hot and that’s something to be reckoned with. Thanks to the high temperatures we have thermal winds that give us perfect conditions for kitesurfing. High temperatures are not very inconvenient thanks to the constant movement of air.

September October

Until about mid-September we have similar wind conditions as in July and August, some days can be cooler and sometimes you have to wear a short wetsuit.

The closer we get to winter, the less chance of good statistics. During this period, however, there are often dynamic atmospheric phenomena that cause strong and very good for swimming for the more advanced cool winds.

To sum up

In my experience, very good months for swimming are April and May. The lagoon then is empty and we are more likely to experience strong winds conducive to higher flights. When it comes to learning, July, August and September are the best choices.

Remember that the weather cannot be predicted further than 3 days ahead. Statistics don’t mean your trip will be 100% successful, and that’s part of the sport called kitesurfing.
